The Trailing Plant for Beginners

Pothos is usually the first plant people build at the bar, and for good reason. It’s forgiving, grows fast, and looks good trailing off a shelf or climbing a moss pole almost immediately.

Light Adapts well to low, medium, or bright indirect light. Variegated varieties (Marble Queen, Manjula) want a bit more light to keep their white/yellow patterning from fading back to solid green.

Water Let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings, roughly every 1-2 weeks. Pothos leaves droop dramatically when thirsty, which is actually a nice, hard-to-miss watering reminder.

Soil & Potting Standard well-draining potting mix is fine. Repot every year or two, or when you see roots circling the bottom of the pot.

Common Problems

• Yellow leaves → most often overwatering. Check that the pot drains and let it dry out more between waterings.
• Leggy vines with leaves far apart → not enough light. Move closer to a window.
• Brown, crispy edges → underwatering or low humidity.

Propagation About as easy as it gets: snip a vine below a node (the little brown bump where roots will form), drop it in a glass of water, and roots appear within a couple weeks. Pot up once roots are a couple inches long.

Pet Safety Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Hang it up or set it somewhere pets can’t reach.
