“I can’t keep anything alive” is something we hear almost every day at the greenhouse and it’s almost never actually true. It usually just means nobody handed you the right first plant. Here are ten that forgive almost every beginner mistake.
- Pothos — tolerates low light, missed waterings, and neglect in general; grows fast enough that you’ll see progress within weeks
- Snake plant — thrives on being ignored; wants to dry out completely between waterings
- ZZ plant — glossy, low-light-tolerant, and stores water in its roots, so it forgives inconsistent watering
- Spider plant — fast-growing, adaptable to a range of light levels, and produces “babies” you can propagate once you’re ready to try
- Philodendron (heart-leaf) — similar ease to pothos, with a slightly different leaf shape
- Succulents (echeveria, haworthia) — ideal for bright windowsills and infrequent watering
- Peperomia — compact, low-maintenance, and happy in medium light
- Chinese money plant — easy care, and its round leaves make it a popular, photogenic first plant
- Aloe vera — a succulent that also happens to be useful (aloe gel for minor burns) as a bonus
- Cast iron plant — genuinely lives up to the name; tolerates low light, dry air, and inconsistent care better than almost anything
A few habits that matter more than the plant you pick
- Check the soil before watering. Most beginner mistakes are overwatering “just in case”
- Make sure every pot has a drainage hole
- Start with one or two plants, not ten. It’s easier to learn their signals when you’re not managing a whole shelf at once
